Upon Shadows is a female dark metal duo formed in Montevideo, Uruguay, active since 2002 and
partially based in Finland since 2013. Originally conceived as a trio, the band evolved into a duo
with the release of “Melodies In Grey Scale”, establishing its core identity.
Their music is a passionate fusion of extreme metal and dark ambient, driven by atmospheric
keyboards and poetic lyrics. Upon Shadows creates dark, melancholic soundscapes that immerse
listeners in a profound emotional and sonic depth. Each album stands as a distinct conceptual work,
yet all are bound by a strong dark essence and emotional intensity.
The current line-up features Natalia Arocena (bass) and Tamara Picardo (keyboards, guitars,
vocals).
Throughout their career, Upon Shadows has released eight albums, along with several singles and
EPs, and has collaborated with notable artists from the international metal scene, including Kimmo
Luttinen (ex-Impaled Nazarene, Beherit). Some of their work has also been released through the
Finnish label Ground Media Group.
Key releases such as “The Huge Circle Of Time” (2009), “Melodies In Grey Scale” (2011), and
“Modern Obscurantism” (2019) mark important milestones in the band’s evolution. More recent
works like “Poetica” (2023) reflect a return to a rawer, more chaotic sound rooted in their origins.
In 2025, Upon Shadows released “The Son”, a tribute to Uruguayan writer Horacio Quiroga,
incorporating theremin for the first time in their music and expanding their sonic identity.
